I made another because I loved the first one so much.
This time, I wanted a longer jacket, same pattern as the first but with just a few changes.
pattern - Cutting Line Designs, Fun with Fabrics
changes
- shortened the collar band by 2"
- shortened the sleeve band by 1"
- reduced the width of the front band down to a finished size of 2"
- added the collar last so that it overlapped the front bands
- added lining
I used a light muslin foundation to piece the kimono pieces onto and then hand quilted all the sections.
The quilting is kind of cool on the back of the jacket sections and I debated on adding the lining but I wanted a more finished jacket.
The quilting took the longest amount of time in constructing this jacket. It was a good evening project.
Even thought it is not easily seen on the front, I think the quilting gives the jacket more interest and it also stabalizes some of the vintage fabric, some of the fabric is a bit fragile.
The lining is a woven silk fabric that I bought decades ago. It had a flaw in weaving along one edge but it makes a great lining. When I found it for sale, I bought the entire bolt. I am beginning to think that I will never be able to use it all. Both sides of the fabric are workable and on the first kimono jacket I used the other lighter side.
Some of the fabric had holes or weak areas and I just added patches.
I liked the patches so much that I added some to break up the fabric and add interest.
I love Japanese boro, so I worked the damage areas with that as inspiration.
Not sure that I love that bottom piece of fabric on the back, the one with the blocks. I may add some fabric pieces over it.
Very happy with how this jacket turned out and I highly recommend this pattern, it is perfect for playing around with fabric.
Fun with Fabrics.
It's wonderful! I'd love to have enough sewing skills to make one with my scraps...

Patty,
This is a smashing success! I love the fabric combo and layout and the changes you made to the pattern. I have this pattern and will now be looking for fabrics to make one..in my stash, that is.
How did you piece them onto the muslin; by hand machine?
Great job!

Another great jacket. I like patchwork a lot and this fabrics in this are lovely, especially the bottom turquoise piece in the closeup of the patch. You're gonna have a whole new wardrobe soon of very unique clothes.
